I never worked in a junkyard, but I have been known to dig through piles of industrial rubble for parts and pieces of "art." Having spent many years in my early career working in heavy industry (construction, heavy steel fabrication, gold mining), I was attracted to outsized as well as outmoded detritus of industry; scrap metal, gears, wire, and other heavy-duty parts and pieces. In these paintings, I anthropomorphized the characters to represent family scenes of disparate machinery gathering themselves together to go on an outing or scramble around the junkyard for new parts and pieces with which to repair themselves.
