Even as a young child playing in the woods of Maryland, I've always had a fascination with Native Americans and the romanticized versions of their lives. As I grew older and read their real histories and the stories of the inevitable conflicts with the overpowering forces of European culture, I was deeply saddened at the losses suffered by Native Americans. In these pictures, I've tried to depict, in a somewhat satirical and whimsical way, how the various confrontations may've played out and the complete and utter confusion on the part of both groups as to what was expected of them. The various props with which I've littered the landscape, the backdrops, the easels, are all aimed at depicting the strangeness that no doubt gripped the Indians in their encounters with white men and their fear of the potential for inevitable change.
